Good morning everyone, thanks for joining today's call.▋
Buenos días a todos, gracias por unirse a la llamada de hoy.▋

Webex supports dozens of languages for meetings, but its built-in closed captioning only transcribes what it hears—it doesn't translate. If your manager presents quarterly results in German, or a partner in São Paulo walks through a technical spec in Portuguese, Webex will caption the original words. You're left guessing at meaning or waiting until someone switches languages. Translext adds a translation layer: it listens to the tab audio, transcribes speech, and shows you captions in the language you choose, with optional text-to-speech output in that same language.

This only works when you join Webex through the browser, not the desktop application. When you click a meeting link, choose the web option instead of launching the app. Translext captures the audio stream from that browser tab, processes it locally, and overlays captions on your screen. Nothing leaves your machine during the call. No recording is stored after you close the tab. The other participants see no bot, no guest attendee, no indication you're translating—just you, participating as usual.

Opening Webex in Chrome

Webex prefers to launch its desktop application when you click a meeting link, but every invite includes a fallback to join in the browser. After clicking the link, look for text like "Join from your browser" or "Continue in your web browser"—the exact wording shifts depending on whether you're signed in and how the host configured the meeting. Once the meeting loads in a Chrome tab, activate Translext on that tab. The extension will start listening to the tab audio. You can still use your microphone and camera normally. The browser session supports screen sharing, reactions, and chat, though layout differs slightly from the desktop app. If you regularly join the same recurring meeting, bookmark the browser link to skip the app-launch prompt next time.

Why you'd use this on Webex

Webex is popular in enterprise environments where meetings mix languages—regional offices reporting to global leadership, vendor demos delivered in the vendor's local language, training sessions for distributed teams. You might understand enough French to handle email but struggle when three people in Paris debate a budget item at full conversational speed. Or you join a partner call conducted in Japanese, catching product names and numbers but missing the surrounding context. Translext gives you a parallel transcript in a language you read fluently. You can follow along without interrupting to ask for clarification. The spoken output option is useful if you're listening while commuting or need to hear pronunciation, though most people leave it muted during active meetings to avoid echo. Live translation isn't flawless—technical jargon, strong accents, and crosstalk all introduce errors—but it closes the gap when the alternative is understanding ten percent of a one-hour call.

Interface and overlay behavior

Webex's browser interface places video thumbnails along the top or side, with controls at the bottom and an optional sidebar for chat and participant lists. Translext overlays captions as a draggable, resizable box on top of this layout. You can position it to avoid blocking the active speaker's video or the shared screen. If someone presents slides, drag the caption box to an empty corner. The overlay stays on top of the Webex window but disappears if you switch to a different tab or application. Captions appear a few seconds behind live speech—transcription and translation both take time—so expect a short lag before you see translated text. If two people speak at once, the extension tries to process both streams, but accuracy drops and captions may jumble. Webex's built-in live transcription can run simultaneously, giving you the original-language transcript in Webex's panel and the translated version in Translext's overlay, though this doubles the screen real estate you need.

Translating Webex — FAQ

What if the meeting host has disabled the browser join option in Webex settings?

Some Webex site administrators lock meetings to the desktop app for security or feature reasons. If you click a meeting link and see no browser option, only a prompt to download or launch the app, Translext won't work for that meeting. You can ask the host or IT admin whether browser join can be enabled. This is controlled at the site level or per-meeting, not by Webex globally. If browser access stays blocked, you'll need the desktop app, and Translext can't capture that audio.

Does Translext translate what people type in the Webex chat panel?

No. Translext captures and translates audio only. The chat panel in Webex is a separate text interface, and the extension doesn't read or process those messages. If someone pastes a question in Spanish into the chat, you'll see the original Spanish text. You can copy that text and paste it into a separate translation tool if needed, but Translext itself only handles spoken audio from the meeting.

Can I use this if I join a Webex meeting on my phone or tablet?

Translext is a Chrome browser extension for desktop. It doesn't run on mobile devices. If you join a Webex meeting from your iPhone or Android phone, you're using the Webex mobile app, which doesn't support Chrome extensions at all. You would need to join the same meeting from a computer running Chrome, open the meeting in a browser tab rather than the desktop app, and activate Translext there.

What happens if Webex's own live transcription and Translext both produce captions at the same time?

Webex displays its live transcription in a dedicated panel, usually docked to the side or bottom of the meeting window. Translext shows a separate overlay box. Both can run simultaneously without interfering technically, but you'll have two caption streams on screen: one in the original language from Webex, one translated by Translext. This can clutter the interface. Many people turn off Webex's transcription to reduce distraction, or leave Webex's on to compare accuracy. Neither system knows the other is running.

If someone shares a video with audio during a Webex presentation, will that audio get translated?

Yes, as long as the video audio plays through the browser tab. Translext captures all audio in the tab, whether it comes from live microphones or a shared video file. The extension transcribes and translates that audio the same way it handles speech. Keep in mind that video soundtracks—especially with background music, sound effects, or multiple speakers—can confuse the transcription engine, leading to incomplete or garbled captions. Accuracy is best with clear, single-speaker audio.
