Frequently asked

How do I get started?

Install Translext from the Chrome Web Store and pin it. Open the tab you want to translate — a video call, a webinar, a YouTube video, or a live stream — click the Translext icon, choose your language, and press start. Live captions and their translation appear right on the page.

Which languages are supported?

Translext translates between 70+ languages, including right-to-left scripts like Arabic. The spoken language is detected automatically — you only choose the language you want to read or hear.

Does Translext join my meeting or record my audio?

No bot joins your meeting and nothing is recorded. Translext captures the audio of your browser tab and streams it to the translation service only while a session is running; the audio is discarded as it is processed and never stored. If you're signed in, the recognized text and its translation are saved to your history so you can review them later — you can delete that at any time.

How do credits and billing work?

Translext uses prepaid credits: one credit is roughly one minute of translation, and credits never expire. You get 10 free credits when you sign up, and can buy more from Settings → Billing in the extension. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. For a question about a specific charge, email billing@translext.com.

Why do captions sometimes lag behind the speaker?

Translation waits for enough speech to resolve a phrase before rendering it, so there is normally a delay of a second or two. It grows with languages that place the verb at the end of the sentence, such as Japanese or German, because the meaning of a clause is not settled until the final word arrives. Slower, clearer speech shortens the lag noticeably.

Can I use Translext on a desktop app like the Zoom client?

No. Translext captures audio from a browser tab, so whatever you want translated has to be playing in Chrome. For Zoom, Teams, Webex and Meet that means joining through the web client rather than the installed desktop app. For YouTube, Twitch and most streaming sites you are already in the browser, so nothing changes.

Does it work if the audio has no subtitles at all?

Yes. Translext transcribes the spoken audio itself rather than reading a platform's existing caption track, so it works on live calls, streams and videos that have no subtitles of any kind. It does not depend on the site providing captions, and it is not affected by auto-generated captions being unavailable in a given language.

How accurate is it?

Good on clear speech from a decent microphone, and noticeably worse with heavy background noise, several people talking at once, strong regional accents, or specialised jargon and proper nouns. Names, numbers and acronyms are the most common errors. Treat it as a way to follow a conversation in real time, not as a certified transcript or a substitute for a professional interpreter.
