Translext is a Chrome extension that turns speech into live captions in the language you choose. It can listen to a browser tab, or — with Computer audio — to any app on your computer, such as a desktop meeting app or a video player. Because it reads the audio rather than integrating with any single service, it works on video calls, recorded lectures, podcasts and live streams alike. Captions are the default; spoken translation is one click away whenever you would rather listen. There is no bot to invite into your meeting and no file to upload. Audio is never recorded; the text transcript is saved to your History so you can read it later, and you can delete it or switch saving off.
Install the extension and pin it, then click the Translext icon and pick your language. For a video or meeting in a browser tab, choose Tab audio. For an app outside the browser, choose Computer audio and share your computer's sound when Chrome asks — Translext switches the picture off and only uses the sound. Captions appear within a second or two, in an overlay on the page or in a floating window above your other apps. Turn on spoken translation if you would rather listen, ideally with headphones. Stopping the session ends it immediately.
Live speech translation is genuinely hard, and being honest about it is more useful than a marketing claim. Clear speech on a decent microphone — a prepared talk, a one-on-one call, most streamed content — works well. Accuracy drops with heavy background noise, several people talking over each other, very fast unscripted speech, and specialised jargon or proper nouns the model has not seen. Because translation happens as the words arrive, languages that put the verb late can lag slightly before a phrase resolves. It is built to help you follow a conversation in real time, not to produce a certified transcript.
